Welcome to EcoShred.com!  Did you know that there is an entire industry built around helping organizations and individuals destroy sensitive data?  Everybody is familiar with the personal shredder.  Not everyone has heard of the mobile document destruction industry.

Every day, personal information and data is casually, and often illegaly, discarded.  On-site document destruction is an innovative, affordable, quick and convenient way to reduce identity theft.  Protect yourselves, protect your companies, and protect your employees and your customers.  It's time to get serious about data security.

Among other things, this site will educate you about what to look for when selecting a secure, onsite document destruction company.  EcoShred is not affiliated with any document destruction companies.

What should you look for when selecting a secure document destruction company?

The answer to this depends on how sensitive the data is that you are destroying.  There are some good rules of thumb though.

  • Make sure they are NAID Certified (Naid is the National Association for Information Destruction - - to read more, visit www.naidonline.org)
  • Verify that you'll be getting a "Certificate of Destruction" after your materials are destroyed
  • Make sure that they recycle all paper materials after they destroy them.  This is a common practice in the industry, but please verify that the data is recycled.

Who needs to securely destroy their data?  Every industry, every company must take the issue of data security seriously!

For some companies, there are laws that require that a secure process be put in place.  But just from a liability standpoint, you are putting your organization at risk if you do not have a secure document destruction plan in place.

A "plan" is really key here.  Generally, it's not a good idea to have employees be responsible for your data destruction.  Not only does it reduce employee productivity, but it also creates a possible weakness as part of your data security plan.

If there is ever a question about your organizations data security, will you be able to show that you did your due diligence to make sure that your security process is truly secure?  Don't be found negligent in court because you don't have a plan for dealing with sensitive data.
